Montusi Mountain Lodge in the Northern Drakensberg offers luxury accommodation with genuine hospitality in the tranquility of one of the most beautiful settings in South Africa. Montusi is the Anglicised version of the Zulu name "Mountain in the Mist". Until the 1990's it was a farm which had degenerated into an wattle wasteland (the wattle is an exotic tree, brought in from Australia, which destroys local vegetation and water supplies).

When owner Anthony Carte wrote to the then Minister of Water Affairs, Kadar
Asmal, asking for job assistance to preserve and protect this water catchment
area, he never imagined that the nation wide Working for Water scheme would
emerge. With perseverance and many man-hours, the wattles were eradicated,
masses of Kikuyu grass was planted, and the seed of Montusi Mountain Lodge was
sown. Today, your hosts welcome you to their impressive lodge and estate, happy
to share their love and knowledge of this beautiful unspoilt part of South
Africa.
