Situated on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, it is also home to the highest pub in Africa at 2874m. Come and join your hosts, Jonathan and Sylvia Aldous at the top of the Sani Pass at one of the best-kept secret places in Africa. The Sani Pass is accessible via 4x4 only. Passports required. Border post times 8am-4pm. High up on the Drakensberg escarpment, on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, Sani Top Chalet, offers comfortable accommodation beneath a sea of stars at night and breathtaking landscapes by day. It is also home to the highest pub in Africa. 2874m above sea level, Sani Top Chalet can only be reached from South Africa via 4x4 up the Sani Pass. Once you reach the top you can join us for lunch or spend the night in one of South Africa's best kept secret places (Getaway magazine, 2002). A variety of activities will keep visitors entertained from hiking up Thabana-Ntlenyana (3482m) - southern Africa's highest peak, to pony trekking and fishing. During the winter months, skiing and snowboarding are offered, provided it snows. This remote and romantic part of Africa is a world heritage site, the rugged mountains bearing testament to all that have past before them. Come and join your hosts, Jonathan and Sylvia Aldous at the top of the Sani Pass, spend an evening with us; enjoy a wholesome dinner around the fireplace, with our famous gluwhein and listening to all the stories from our adventure travellers. The Sani Pass is accessible via 4x4 only. The chalet is located in Lesotho, therefore passports are essential. The border post opens at 8am and closes at 4pm. The environment is harsh at such high altitudes so don’t forget warm clothing. In winter the water can freeze overnight making showers a luxury. Electricity is made available by means of a generator, which is turned on in the evening for a few hours. AttractionsHike – on your own or with a guide. Fishing. Pony trails. DirectionsComing from Johannesburg, Durban or Pietermaritzburg:
From the N3 take the Underberg off ramp at Exit 99 in the Howick area. Turn towards Underberg on the R617 and travel 111kms. In Underberg village, turn right to Himeville/Sani Pass. Travel 5kms to Himeville, and a further 4km through Himeville to the Sani Pass turn-off. The South African border post is 32kms from Himeville and travelling time is approximately 1 hour. It is 8kms from the South African border post to the Lesotho border post. The Chalet is immediately on the right as you cross into Lesotho.
From Maseru, Ox-Bow, & Katse Dam:
Travel to Mokhotlong and take the signs to Sani Pass. Its 53kms from Mokhotlong and will take 1 hour and 30 minutes. |
