Sani Top Chalet - the highest pub in Africa

Description

Sani Top Chalet is a small rustic establishment on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment. Situated on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, it is also home to the highest pub in Africa at 2874m. Come and join your hosts, Jonathan and Sylvia Aldous at the top of the Sani Pass at one of the best-kept secret places in Africa. The Sani Pass is accessible via 4x4 only. Passports required. Border post times 8am-4pm.

High up on the Drakensberg escarpment, on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, Sani Top Chalet, offers comfortable accommodation beneath a sea of stars at night and breathtaking landscapes by day. It is also home to the highest pub in Africa.

2874m above sea level, Sani Top Chalet can only be reached from South Africa via 4x4 up the Sani Pass. Once you reach the top you can join us for lunch or spend the night in one of South Africa's best kept secret places (Getaway magazine, 2002). A variety of activities will keep visitors entertained from hiking up Thabana-Ntlenyana (3482m) - southern Africa's highest peak, to pony trekking and fishing. During the winter months, skiing and snowboarding are offered, provided it snows. This remote and romantic part of Africa is a world heritage site, the rugged mountains bearing testament to all that have past before them. Come and join your hosts, Jonathan and Sylvia Aldous at the top of the Sani Pass, spend an evening with us; enjoy a wholesome dinner around the fireplace, with our famous gluwhein and listening to all the stories from our adventure travellers.

The Sani Pass is accessible via 4x4 only. The chalet is located in Lesotho, therefore passports are essential. The border post opens at 8am and closes at 4pm. The environment is harsh at such high altitudes so don’t forget warm clothing. In winter the water can freeze overnight making showers a luxury. Electricity is made available by means of a generator, which is turned on in the evening for a few hours.
